Sports #14

"I've known the fear of losing but now I am almost too frightened to win."

Update: Another clue (it's not Any Given Sunday):
"Yeah, he's fast! But he won't go any faster."

Update: Another clue:
"God made countries, God makes kings, and the rules by which they govern."

Update: Chariots of Fire contains one of my all-time favorite movie quotes:
"I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure."

Musical #9

"If allies are strong with power to protect me,
Might they not protect me out of all I own?"

Update: Another clue:
"There'll be nothing left on earth excepting fishes!"

Update: Another clue:
"When I sit, you sit. When I kneel, you kneel."

Update: Joanne is 100% correct. The King and I

Sports #13

"I know I don't got a lot up there, but what I got sure don't feel too good. "

Update: Another clue:
"_____ got into a fight."
"Who with?"
"The 7th Grade."

Update: Correct. The original Bad News Bears.

"You know, a basketball hero around here is treated like a god"

Update: Most every list of the top sports movies has this one in the top 3: Hoosiers

Sports #11

"He's on his final hole. He's about 455 yards away, he's gonna hit about a 2 iron I think. "

Update: Just be the ball...Caddyshack Another great (and long) quote:

"So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. "

Musical #8

"And in my happiness, I forgive you all!"
"Forgive me? How dare she forgive me?"

Update: Another clue:
"I suppose I shall simply have to rise to the occasion and do something spectacular, yet again. And spectaculars always take so much out of me... It was the same with Snow White. All the same, you young girls: never do as you're told! Men are MUCH easier. "

Update: This is probably a lesser know movie, but I have always enjoyed it. Another quote:
"Is the ceremony over? What a relief!"

Update: Some lyrics. I'm hoping Jason knows this one:
"We must be protocoligorically correct."

Update: I figured I would have to go with an easier clue. This is from The Slipper and the Rose. It had more depth as a retelling of Cinderella, as it went into the political consequences of the prince marrying a commoner. Plus, there are some good songs by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins) and some great one liners.

Sports #10

"D'you know that my next door neighbor has three rabbits?"

Update: Yup..Jerry Maquire

Sports #9

"Is it three strikes, Doc?"
"You want it straight?"
"Yeah."
"It's three strikes."

Update: Additional clue:
"Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

Update: I knew that quote would give it away, but I had a hard time finding quotes that someone might deduce the movie from. It is indeed The Pride of the Yankees, with Gary Cooper as Lou Gherig and Babe Ruth as Babe Ruth. A pretty good biopic.

Musical #7

"I like rich people. I like the way they live, and I like the way I live when I'm with them."

Update: Another clue:
"You brought music back into the house. I had forgotten."

Update: Good job, Adam. It is The Sound of Music.

Musical #6

"If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as though our hard work ain't been in vain for nothin'."

Update: I can see where you might get Annie, given the grammer, but it is indeed Singin' in the Rain (note the lack of a 'g' in the official title). As much as I love Gene Kelly in this, every time I see Make 'em Laugh with Donald O'Conner, I am left breathless from the sheer energy.

Sports #8

"You're the goalie. It's supposed to hit you."
"Does that sound stupid to anyone else?"

Update: Since the mighty Oregon Ducks have made it to the sweet 16, I thought it appropriate to choose The Mighty Ducks. (I'd feel stupid doing it if they lost).

Musical #5

"He's having a stroke!"
"What?"
"Of Genius!"

Update: Yes, The Producers

Sports #7

"When you pull on that jersey, the name on the front is a hell of alot more important than the one on the back. "

Update: My other favorite quote from Miracle
"You're missing the best players."
"I'm not looking for the best players, Craig, I'm lookin' for the right ones."

Musical #4

There are two movies featuring the following song lyric. See if you can name them both.

"Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star"

Update: One of them is Annie Get Your Gun. Hint: If you know the name of the song, you know the other movie.

Update: The song and movie is There's No Business Like Show Business, with Ethel Merman, Donald O'Conner, and Marilyn Monroe.

Update: Another clue:
"I guess some mistakes you never stop paying for. "

Update: One of the few movies that is better than the book (at least the ending)...The Natural

Musical #3

Now for an older musical:

"I wanted to marry her when I saw the moonlight shining on the barrel of her father's shotgun. "

Update: Joanne is correct. This is from Oklahoma.

Sports #5

"Your kid ate the line up."

Update: "Take me home momma and put me to bed. I have seen enough to know I have seen too much." from 'A League of Their Own'

Saturday, March 10, 2007

Sports #4

"Hey, what if the Voice calls while you're gone?"
"Take a message."

Update: From "Field of Dreams"

Friday, March 09, 2007

Sports #3

"I think this is a very good time for prayer and reflection... "
"Coach, I'm hurt. I'm not dead."

Update: Yes...Remember the Titans
"Man I just gave your momma a piggy-back ride and she weighs twice as much as I do! "

Thursday, March 08, 2007

Sports #2

"This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen!"

Update: "He's so little!" - I agree that 'Rudy' is probably the best sports movie ever, although people who don't like Notre Dame have a hard time liking this film.

Musical #2

"What if your hinges all are rusting?
What if, in fact, you're just disgusting ?"

Update: More lyrics from the same song:
"Long as you keep 'em way off balance
How can they spot you got no talents?"

Update: Another clue:
"In this town, murder's a form of entertainment."

Update: Another clue:
"My client feels that it was a combination of liquor and jazz that led to the downfall."

Update: The song was Razzle Dazzle from Chicago

Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Musical #1

"Never fall in love with a woman who sells herself. It always ends bad."

Update: Yes, Laurel. I did that one just for you. "Moulin Rouge"

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Sports #1

"It's a fish."
"What color is it?"
"Black."
"Can you eat it?"

Update: I added a line to the first clue, plus here's another.

"I'm a Texas woman, which means I don't need the help of a man to keep things running."

Update: Correct. It's one of my favorites, "The Rookie".

Sports Musicals?

I'm back. Needed a little break. I was having a hard time deciding which theme to use next. In honor of the March Madness basketball tournament, I thought I would do sports movies. However, I know there are some that wouldn't know too many, and as they may have already been frustrated by the sequels theme, I decided to add a second category and alternate them.

I figure if you don't know sports, you may know musicals, and vice versa. I happen to love both. I can only think of one sports musical off-hand, so there won't be much crossover. The posts will be clearly labeled with the category.

Note: For the musicals category, I will be giving one extra bit of help. If the quote is from the lyrics of a song, I will put it in italics. Spoken quotes will be regular font.

Ready....go sing yourself a home run!
